Increasing our range of products

Let's talk baskets!

Everyone who has visited Orford over the last 30-40 years knew the then "Craft Shop" by its baskets.  It was inevitable that in response to current demand we would have to find a way to stock a selection of quality baskets for those with a nostalgic delight, and for all those customers who make a special journey to choose new or replacement baskets because of its long-standing reputation.

We searched high and low in Suffolk for local basketmakers and found  that there were none.  Those who work with willow and other materials occasionally make small quantities, but nothing like the sizes and range we would need.  So reluctantly we sourced our baskets from an ethical company in Derbyshire which imports a full range of basketware.  We keep a range in the shop but can always check any special requests you may have to see if we can source them for you.

Local Products

As well as the talented artists and makers that supply us there are other makers who manufacture items locally which we have sourced to add to the range of products across the centre.

Finding your way

Suffolk has a beautiful range of landscape, particularly along itss coastline which is an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).  We stock a series of maps which cover the area from Lowestoft down to the Deben Estuary. They are accurate, easy to follow and show all the footpaths and byways for those long lazy walks in the summer and for the bracing  walks in the winter time.

We stock some independently sourced books including the brand new "Suffolk Smugglers' Pubs" which provides some background to the involvement of the local hostelries close to the rivers and sea where there is a history of smuggling.  All of the pubs are open for business and our own pub The King's Head is featured in the book.

We also have "Suffolk Feast : One county twenty chefs".  This is a gourmet delight of a book featuring not only a feast of recipes but the stories of the chefs who have created them as well as where to go to eat more of their food or perhaps have them prepare their delicious signature dishes for you.

Lazy Sunday Afternoons - and other evenings

So once, you have finished crabbing on the Quay, or after your return from a sailing trip or long day's walking, what do you do?  We stock some traditional wooden games and for the younger members of the family some irresistably cute Hobby Horses that they can race in the garden so they sleep well at night.
